Austin Elite Rugby is Excited to Announce the Signing of Spanish International David Mélé
(TEXAS, USA) May 9, 2019 — Austin Elite Rugby is honored to announce the acquisition of Perpignan standout, David Mélé. The 33-year-old, versatile #9 and #10 is from Narbonne, France. He is officially set to join Austin Elite Rugby for the 2020 Major League Rugby season.
Mélé is a talented scrumhalf that began his professional career in 2006 with USAP Perpignan. Following their Top 14 Championship win in 2009, and a final’s appearance in 2010 with USAP, he left France to join the Leicester Tigers in 2013. During this time he was selected to represent France in the FIRA Andorra and Georgia 7’s series (2006-2007) and the French Barbarians, an invitational feeder team to the F.F.R, in their June tour to Argentina (2009).
He spent two successful seasons with the Leicester Tigers (ENG) before returning back to the French Rugby Championship to suit up for Stade Toulousain, one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe (2015-2016).
He signed with Grenoble ahead of their 2016-2017 season. In 2018, after playing an integral role in Grenoble’s return back into the Top 14 through a victory in the roadblock against Oyonnax, he left the club to return to USAP Perpignan. This year, Mélé got the call-up to represent Spain’s XV National Side in the Six Nations Cup against Belgium.
“We’re very pleased to officially announce the signing of Mélé commented Thierry Daupin CEO, Austin Elite Rugby. “He has got a huge amount of experience and this will assist in developing our young and talented players around him.”
The USA Perpignan product will be a welcomed addition to our backline next season and is continuing proof that Major League Rugby is on the up rise – get ready America!
